Custom probably collected from Duncan Cameron, police officer, Tobar Mhoire/Tobermory, Muile/Isle of Mull, for repelling the neas [stoat] from calves stating that as stoats hate the smell of burning, people burn the tail and leg of a new calf or old leather.
Customs relating to cattle herding, 1895
Customs written down by John Ewen MacRury, Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula relating to cattle herding, describing how when herding cattle to or from the house a number of cattle were allowed to follow behind the herder to avoid the evil eye. Also, if someone praised the cattle, the herder had to praise the cattle even higher. Text has been scored through in pencil as if transcribed elsewhere.

Story about sea-cattle and accompanying custom, 20 January 1871
Story telling how a woman in Crocantorran [Cnoc an Torrain/Knockintorran, Uibhist a Tuath/North Uist] who had a little child saw cattle eating seaweed on a snowy day. She thought they were eating it because of the snow and so she followed them and got a fright when she saw them go into the sea to the extent that she was ill for a month. It was said that if a handful of earth is thrown on sea cattle they 'cant forsake the land'.

Vocabulary note probably collected from Duncan Cameron, police officer, Tobar Mhoire/Tobermory, Muile/Isle of Mull, for 'Seamalach' and 'caraideachadh' describing the former as a heifer whose calf had died and the latter as when the calf of one cow is killed, its tail is cut off and tied to a [cloth] and placed on another calf which can then suckle both cows.
